Juillard, Emile (1853-1941)
Born in a family from Tramelan established in Ajoie, Emile Juillard transforms, in 1872, the family workshop of terminage into a watchmaking counter in Porrentruy. He develops his own calibers during the 1890s and sells an important part of his production under the brand name Bulla.
Emile Juillard is very active in the industrial fields: he is notably a member of the executive board for the “Contrôle des métaux précieux” (precious metals control), member of the executive committee of the “Société des fabricants du district de Porrentruy” (Manufacturers corporation of the Porrentruy’s district) and presides the commission of the watchmaking school between 1900 and 1935. He is also engaged in politics, in the liberal party, and was elected to the municipal council. Furthermore, he is an honorable member of the “Société fédérale de gymnastique” (Federal gymnastic corporation) of the town, founding member of the “Coopérative bruntrutaine”and adviser of the Reformed parish of Porrentruy during around forty years.
When he died, the family-owned firm is transformed in a limited company. In 1935 it is taken by his son Albert Juillard (1941) and by his grandson Georges Juillard (1947), both member of the watchmaking sub-comission of the professional school of Porrentruy. In 1973, the watchmaking factory Bulla SA shuts down after Georges Juillard’s death.
