The history of the Porrentruy Watchmaking School goes back to 1842, when the first apprentice workshop was created at the Castle.
A few decades later, the official decision to establish a real school was taken in 1882, and the institution opened in 1884.
From then on, students regularly produced so-called “school watches”, genuine apprenticeship masterpieces designed to put into practice
both technical knowledge and artistic skills taught in class.
These watches cover a wide period, from the 19th-century examples – now rare and highly sought after – to more recent models. They bear witness to the mastery of future watchmakers and to the evolution of watchmaking techniques.
The selection presented here illustrates this diversity: pocket watches and chronographs, some of which were made by Christian Etienne during his apprenticeship. Each piece tells a part of the history of Jura watchmaking and the central role of Porrentruy in Swiss watchmaking education.
