Glashütte, in Saxony, ranks among the great historic centres of German precision horology. After the Second World War, the region’s manufactures were brought together within VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), which continued the production of chronometric instruments intended for navigation and observation.

Dated 1955, this marine chronometer is preserved in its mahogany box. It follows the classic architecture of this type of instrument: detent escapement, transmission by barrel, belt and fusee, bimetallic balance with screws, and cylindrical hairspring. This traditional construction was designed to ensure stable running, suited to the demands of nautical and scientific timekeeping.

Sternzeit Indication

The dial bears the inscription “Sternzeit”, meaning sidereal time. This indication refers to a system of time measurement used in astronomy and in certain navigational calculations, based on the rotation of the Earth in relation to the fixed stars.

Through its architecture, function and provenance, this Glashütte GUB chronometer represents a particularly interesting precision instrument for collectors of scientific horology and antique marine instruments.
