Zénith Sub Aviator

A “Tool Watch” for Sky and Sea

Produced in 1974 in approximately 500 examples, the Zenith Sub Aviator El Primero (ref. A3822) embodied a bold concept — a hybrid watch designed for both pilots and divers. It combines the precision of an aviation chronograph with the robustness of a diving instrument, creating a powerful and functional design true to the spirit of the 1970s.

Its 44 mm stainless-steel case with a rotating bezel and high-contrast grey dial was built for maximum readability in any condition. Prominent pushers, a knurled crown and luminous hands emphasize its instrument-like ergonomics — a true “tool watch” bridging air and sea.

The Beating Heart: El Primero 3019 PHC

At its core ticks the legendary El Primero 3019 PHC — one of the world’s first high-frequency automatic chronograph calibres, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour.

This column-wheel movement offers crisp actuation of the chronograph and remarkable stability of rate. Its fine architecture and high oscillation speed allow for 1/10th of a second precision, making the El Primero a lasting symbol of Zenith’s technical excellence.

Workshop Restoration: Reliability and Authenticity

A complete restoration was performed at the Clinique Horlogère: the El Primero 3019 PHC movement was fully disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and regulated to its original frequency.

The automatic winding system and rotor bearing were checked, the chronograph reset mechanism serviced, and all gaskets replaced. Pushers and crown were cleaned, lubricated and tested.

The case was cleaned without excessive polishing, preserving the original edges and patina. The result is a watch restored to full reliability, faithful to its authentic character and historical integrity.
