How it works
It is necessary to distinguish 2 parts :
- an electrical part consisting of 2 coils, a diode, an electrical circuit and 2 batteries
- a mechanical part consisting of an escapement and a gear train. The balance wheel serves as an intermediary between these two parts.
The oscillations of the balance wheel move a gold contact wire which makes it possible to close or open the electric circuit.
When the circuit closes, the coils and their cores (stator) act as an electromagnet that pushes the balance wheel (rotor) back, maintaining its oscillation. The circuit breaks almost instantaneously when the contact finger no longer presses on the contact wire. The balance spring then ensures the reverse oscillation of the balance wheel and the start of a new oscillation cycle.
The balance wheel, whose oscillation is maintained by the electrical part, activates an escapement and a gear train that moves the hands and thus displays the time.
